The Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP) Founded in 1955, the Indian Association of Physiotherapists (IAP) is the largest and oldest national body representing the physiotherapy profession in India. With over 100,000 registered members, IAP is a pioneer in advancing the scope, recognition, and quality of physiotherapy practice across the country.

IAP’s mission extends beyond clinical practice—it actively leads in policy advocacy, legal reform, education standardization, and inter-sectoral engagement. The association works closely with ministries including the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, AYUSH, Social Justice and Empowerment, and Women and Child Development, as well as with WHO-SEARO and various state governments.

Key initiatives of IAP include:

  • Steering the passage of the Physiotherapy Council Bill, pushing for statutory recognition of the profession.
  • Leading national dialogues on physiotherapy’s integration into Ayushman Bharat, National Health Missions, and public health insurance
  • Rolling out digital health, tele-physiotherapy, and rehabilitation documentation systems aligned with WHO and ISO/NABH standards.
  • Hosting capacity-building programs such as PhysioManthan, the IAP Women Cell Conference, and national CMEs.

Through its active membership in World Physiotherapy, IAP is internationally recognized for promoting evidence-based, inclusive, and equitable physiotherapy services in one of the world's largest health systems.
